Ink on Paper is the debut book of 13-year-old author/poet Vishikha Tripathi. I say author/poet because the book contains stories and poems. Each poem is preceded by prose to set up the stage for it and I must say I found even the prose to be poetic at times.
If you thought that teenagers could only write about school and exam pressure or adolescence level issues that seem childish and trivial to an adult’s eyes, this book will debunk that myth. As the summary of the book mentions, it really was a blend of emotions set in rhyme.
This book is interwoven with mature themes. Some of the poems were so thought proving that I would never have guessed it was written by a 13-year-old if I didn’t know about the writer.
Reading this book was enjoyable in itself, but it also makes me proud and happy about the next generation. We often say that reading habit is on a decline and kids these days don’t appreciate literature. Knowing that a teen is not just an avid reader, but also a poet penning such wise words gives me hope for the next generation’s literary liaisons. This book makes me want to read more teen writers.
As for the writing style, I found it pleasing to read poems that rhyme. In a day where modern poetry is ruling the roost, as someone who loves a good rhyme scheme, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book.
